Lacquer: A non-resinous sap produced by various plants belonging to the Rhus family. These trees are tapped and their sap is collected into caps, with one tree yielding six to seven ounces per season. The fresh sap is gray, translucent and somewhat viscous. When exposed to air and sunlight, it rapidly thickens and darkens. It has been employed since ancient times, both in China and Japan, for the decoration of objects made of wood, leather, papier mâché, ceramics and shell and stone.
